The Child Life department at Tucson Medical Center provides direct patient care to 45 inpatient pediatric and pediatric intensive care beds and several outpatient areas that serve pediatric patients.

TMC’s practicum program aims to familiarize students with child life, child development and other careers in the medical field. Practicum students are provided with opportunities to learn how child life specialists apply theory to practice by observing child life interventions including patient assessments, various procedural preparations and support, and medical and therapeutic play sessions. Practicum students will also engage patients in one-to-one bedside activities, as well as plan and facilitate weekly group playroom activities.

Our practicum offers 120 hours (12 weeks) during the summer semester only. We are only able to accommodate one practicum student per year.

Practicum students will shadow and observe child life specialists in the following areas:

  • Surgery
  • General Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care
  • Radiology
  • Emergency Department
