The Diabetes Education Program at Tucson Medical Center is offered by certified diabetes educators who are registered nurses and dietitians. It covers everything that you need to know and is tailored to meet your needs. We offer both individual and group training for diabetes Type 1, Type 2 and diabetes in pregnancy. The American Diabetes Association recognizes this program meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Individual training

Individual training is available Monday through Friday by appointment. Topics covered include:

  • Glucose monitoring
  • Individual meal plan
  • Medication education
  • Insulin training, including meal insulin and pen use
  • Advanced insulin pump training

Group training

Group training is also available both weekday evenings and Saturdays. Classes consist of 10 hours of training over four weekly sessions. The classes are interactive with hands-on training, discussion, videos and presentations. Topics include:

  • Disease process
  • Medication/insulin education
  • Meal planning, dining out
  • Low blood sugar/high blood sugar
  • Sick day management
  • Stress management
  • Prevention of complications

Free Outpatient Classes and Support

For uninsured patients or patients that have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, TMC offers an eight-hour class, Journey for Control, Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. To learn more or to register, please call (520) 324-1960.

Additionally, TMC offers free education sessions and support that cover a wide variety of helpful topics. Discussion is facilitated by a certified diabetes educator. Classes are held on the second Wednesday of each month from 5-6 p.m. at the El Dorado Health Campus Cafeteria. No registration is necessary. To look at the full schedule of classes, click here.
